Three of the most wanted human traffickers in Pakistan have been arrested. They are accused of trafficking between 150-200 people into Europe and also of human smuggling. To read more, click here.

The United States State Department issued its 2009 Trafficking in Persons report put 52 countries on the watchlist, a jump of 30 percent over the 40 on the list in 2008. The major jump is in part tied to the worldwide recession. Countries newly added to the list include Angola, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Iraq, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Pakistan, the Philippines, Qatar, Senegal and the United Arab Emirates. Eleven people were arrested in Dubai this week in connection with an alleged human trafficking ring. The charges include running a brothel and forcing women into prostitution through violence and intimidation. Additionally, nine women were charge with prostitution for working in the brothel. Two underage girls were removed from the brothel, they are being treated as victims of trafficking. Click here for more information.

The United States has taken steps to ease the visa application process for victims of trafficking and abuse. This move recognizes the victimhood of those people who have faced domestic violence, sexual assault, and were trafficking into the country. The report states there are at least 5,000 victims of trafficking living in Britain right now, being forced to beg and to work in the sex trade. Home Affairs Committee chairman Keith Vaz said: "This is not immigration crime and cannot be dealt with as such. What we are seeing is in effect a resurgence of a type of slave trade, yet we have no good information on the scale of the problem, enforcement is patchy, prosecution rates are low and there is little protection for victims." Two women originally facing charges in connection with a human trafficking ring have had those charges dropped as they are now suspected to be victims of the traffickers, not participants. Even when all the signs of exploitation are present when men are being trafficked - such as the confiscation of legal documents - men are more likely to be labeled migrant workers and passed over by authorities. In a recent study by the NEXUS Institute for the IOM, men were found to represent 28 percent of all those people trafficked from Belarus, for example, usually being sent into forced labor in Russia. The CBI chief, Ashwan Kumar, said that more than 85 percent of the more than 1.2 million people trafficked in India are trafficked around the country. Sex tourism - especially child prostitution - is a rising industry in the country that serves as a source, transit center and destination for the crime. Kumar also said "The root cause of the problem is poverty, under development, unemployment among others. Therefore, we have to address the problem both socially and by enforcing law."
